Charles Lawrence Rhoney Sr., 90, of Hickory, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at his residence.
Born November 14, 1933 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ethel Thornburg Rhoney and Horace Dixon Rhoney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Eugene Rhoney and by his sister, Mildred Rhoney Burton.
A graduate of Hildebran High School, Lawrence worked at Rhoney Chair Company a total of 76 years. For 46 of those years he owned and operated the company and created a name people could trust. He was respected by his employees and by other businesses in the community. He was the hardest worker even up until this past winter. He even went as far as trying to put in applications around town this past fall and winter. He loved to stay busy and work on anything he could. An early riser, he always started his day out in the yard watering plants, spraying for bugs or weeds, or even going to the local convenience site. Everywhere you would see him, you would always see his companion of four years, Baxter, his boston terrier. He was an animal lover and loved to feed and watch birds. He loved to fish and became quite the great fisherman. He loved sports and in his younger years was quite the athlete. His personal accomplishments were many but his investment in others and their success is what stands out the most. He supported the dreams of others and encouraged and helped in any way he could so others could accomplish their dreams.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Johnson Rhoney of the home. His daughters Ragan Michelle Martin, Stacie Martin King and husband, Jason, grandsons Remington King & Easton King, and granddaughter Charleigh King all of Hickory. Son, Ashley Rhoney and wife Sherry of Lafayette Louisiana, granddaughter Kaylan Rhoney and grandson Chase Rhoney. Sons Charles Rhoney, Don Rhoney, and Barry Rhoney. Others survivors include numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will hold a private service at a later date.
