Dr. Charles Emmette McDaniel, age 85, of Boone, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born June 12, 1932, son of the late Charles Milton and Bessie Sapp McDaniel. He met Barbara Burnett at church camp and got married in 1955. They dedicated their lives to each other and to service God.
Dr. McDaniel graduated from Florida State University and was employed to work there as an administrator for two years before he accepted a position as a coach and teacher at Melbourne High School in Melbourne Florida. Although he only worked there for six years, he has kept in touch with many of his former students over the years and when they call to speak with each other, they fondly still call him “Coach”. To them he was not only was a coach and teacher, but set the example how to live your life and how to treat others. He was a mentor for their lives.
Over the next 5 years, Charles pursued his Doctorate in Drivers Education from Michigan State University. He then designed and developed driving ranges and traffic safety programs throughout the United States.
After he received his Doctorate, he and his family settled in Boone, N.C in 1971 where he accepted a position as a professor at Appalachian State University until his retirement.
“Charlie Mac” known as “The Dean of Driver Education” was a nationally recognized authority in his field. He once served as President of the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA) and was on the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council. He has written nineteen books.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Burnett McDaniel of the home; two daughters, Jeanie Hollar and husband Terry of Hickory, Sharon McDaniel of Sebastopol, CA; one son, Robert McDaniel of Arcata, CA; grandchildren, Ashley Hollar Sigmon and husband Tyler of Hickory, Josh Hollar and wife Mandy of Raleigh, NC, Verania McDaniel of Arcata, CA, Terra Linda Ashbrook currently serving in United States Coast Guard, Merlin Ashbrook of Arcata, CA, Eve Ashbrook of Arcata, CA; three great grandchildren, Charlotte, Levi, and Maggie; one sister, Marie Hackney of FL; many nieces and nephews and adopted family and friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Perkinsville Baptist Church, 274 Jefferson Road Boone, NC 28607 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Seth Norris officiating. Burial will be private.
